In the area of capacity building and training, there is a need to establish partnerships with African universities, and with internationally renowned research groups to develop systematic capacity building and training programs. Opportunities are continuously being sought by BecA to identify synergies with current programs, and to complement them. This includes enabling access to the facilities and services available at the BecA Hub, regional nodes and/or other participating laboratories, by other biosciences programs in Africa, where these facilities and services would be helpful for the conduct of their research and capacity building and training activities. The BecA Hub offers the following capacity building and training services:
The BecA Hub promotes scientific excellence by bringing together a critical mass of scientists drawn from national, regional and international institutions in modern facilities where they can undertake cutting edge research. At the BecA Hub, extensive biosciences capacity in livestock-related research is provided through BecA Hub, while crop biosciences capacity is being provided by the following hosted institutes: the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA), the International Crops Research Institute for the Semi-Arid Tropics (ICRISAT), the International Maize and Wheat Improvement Center (CIMMYT), and the Kenya Agricultural Research Institute (KARI). Raising awareness and building capacity in bioinformatics in Africa is one of the major focus areas. This is accomplished through regular training courses and research projects undertaken at the BecA Hub. In association with the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences and the Linnaeus Centre for Bioinformatics, in Uppsala, Sweden, BecA and BecA Hub run an annual two-week “Introduction to Bioinformatics” training course. Since 2005, we have trained more than 100 students from more than five eastern and central Africa countries in the field of bioinformatics. |
