Building African research leadership Between December 2010 and December 2011, ABCF supported 17 scientists and will support over 50 new placements at the BecA-ILRI Hub in 2012. ABCF fellows are involved in research touching on major issues directly related to food security and income generation in the region. The challenge fund makes it possible for them to solve these here, in Africa, using cutting edge science. Projects include, but are not limited to, epidemiology of the African swine fever virus, marker development for improving orphan crops like enset and wild rice, as well as animal diversity projects on African indigenous chickens, domestic cavies and indigenous goats. These projects have been led by scientists from national programmes and universities in sub-Saharan Africa, supported by an international network of leading scientists – utilising equipment and skills that they would not have access to otherwise. The following countries from which the ABCF fellows are drawn, have links to fellowship recipients and details about their research projects.
