Dr. Appolinaire Djikeng is the Technology Manager at the BecA Hub. He holds a PhD in Molecular Parasitology from Brunel University, UK and a BSc and MSc from the University of Yaoundé I, Yaoundé, Cameroon. He carried out all his PhD work, funded by the ILRI training program and the WHO/TDR training program on tropical diseases, at ILRI Nairobi. He then proceed to Yale University School of Medicine (CT, USA) for his post doctorate and while there, also served for one year as junior faculty in the section of Infectious Diseases. At Yale University, Dr. Djikeng’s research focused on various aspects of the regulation of gene expression and on the development of essential tools for RNA interference (RNAi) in the African trypanosome Trypanosoma brucei.
In 2004 he joined the Parasite genomics group of the Institute for Genomic Research (TIGR) and then the Infectious Diseases group at the J Craig Venter Institute (JCVI). At TIGR/JCVI Dr. Djikeng worked in the broad field of genomics (technology development and applications) focusing on parasites, viruses, the environment and emerging and re-emerging pathogens.
In addition to research in the USA, Dr. Djikeng currently contributes to capacity building in Africa through teaching of graduate school courses, MSc and PhD student research supervision in Africa and research at the Centre International de Référence Chantal Biya (CIRCB, Yaoundé, Cameroon) focusing on the use of genomics, bioinformatics to accelerate and improve strategies for the control of HIV/AIDS.
He brings to the BecA Hub team significant interest and experience in training, capacity building, research and transfer of technology and knowledge to developing countries.
