Dan Kiambi is a Senior Scientist at the International Crops Research Institute for the Semi-Arid Tropics (ICRISAT, Regional Office for East and Southern Africa). He is currently based at ILRI, (BecA-ILRI) Hub and has been conducting his laboratory related research activities using the BecA hub since February 2006. He has extensive experience in research and development for conservation and sustainable utilization of plant genetic resources and application of molecular tools in crop improvement. He has experience mainly in Africa and has been involved in development of complex institutional linkages and partnerships involving government agencies, agricultural research and development organizations. He has developed and coordinated many national, regional and international initiatives/projects on crop genetic resources, diversity studies and Marker Assisted Breeding. He is currently carrying out research and managing multi-country projects on application of markers in crop improvement. His current research activities are in Marker Assisted Breeding, especially QTL mapping and introgression of QTLS for biotic and abiotic stresses in sorghum. He is also having substantial research activities in germplasm characterization and genetic diversity studies using phenotypic and molecular makers. In addition, he is involved in building the capacity of Africa scientists in the use of molecular markers for crop improvement through specialized training courses and supervision of postgraduate students. He is seeking collaboration in marker trait associations for sorghum and millet improvement and also in comparative mapping, isolation and sequencing of genes/gene complexes responsible for conferring resistance against biotic stresses.
