Ephy Khaemba is an Environment, Occupational Health & Safety (EOHS)/Community Liaison Officer responsible for the environmental management program, occupational health service, safety management program (including radiation, chemical, biological, engineering, construction, fire, office, etc), hygiene programs (kitchen, staff, visitors, etc), regulatory compliance on research (DVS, KEPHIS, NEMA, public health, etc) and community liaison at the BecA Hub.

Ephy has a Bachelor of Science in Microbiology and a post graduate diploma in Occupational Health and Safety from Institute of working Life, Stockholm, Sweden as well as a diploma in Business Management from Kenya Institute of Management (K.I.M.). She is also trained in Design and Operation of Level 3 facilities in Ottawa, Canada, and in Environmental Biosafety with emphasis on greenhouse containment at Michigan State University, USA. She is a trained and registered Environmental Auditor in East Africa and has attended the CGIAR Women leadership & Management development course.

After graduating from the University, Ephy worked for National Environmental Secretariat (NES) as an Environmental Health Trainer in 1992. In 1994, she moved to Kenya Bureau of Standards (K.B.S.) where she worked as a Laboratory Analyst. In 1996, she worked at Smithkline Beecham (SB) as the Microbiologist and in 1999, made a career shift to Environment Occupational Health & Safety management. In 2001, SB and Glaxo Welcome merged to form Glaxo Smithkline (GSK) and she became the GSK EOHS Manager. In 2005, she joined ILRI as a Biosafety Officer and in 2006, the position was expanded to include Occupational Health, Safety program and Environment program. In 2007, the position was further expanded to include Community Liaison and Regulatory Compliance.

She is a member of:

  • The National Biosafety Committee – Kenya
