Molecular Immunologist Unit: Imaging and Cytometry Speciality Area: Molecular Immunology Email: This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it Jan Naessens got his training in immunology at the Free University of Brussels where he also obtained his Ph.D. At ILRI, he has used flow cytometry since the early ‘80’s when he used the Becton Dickinson FACS II for identification of leukocyte populations and cell cycle analysis. He is now responsible for the functioning of the BecA Flow Cytometry Unit. He holds a Licentiate Chemistry (not equivalent to M.Sc.), Free University of Brussels (V.U.B.) and a Doctorate in Sciences, Free University of Brussels (V.U.B.) Jan has built a reputation in veterinary immunology and on tropical diseases of cattle, and his current interests focus on the immunology of trypanosomiasis, theileriosis and contagious bovine pleuropneumonia. He has built a collection of monoclonal antisera to identify the various subpopulations of bovine leukocytes and several functional cell surface molecules. He helped organize some of the ruminant leukocyte antigen workshops in the ‘90’s and established an acknowledged nomenclature for animal leukocyte markers. Jan is also the ex-chairman of the veterinary committee of the International Union of Immunological Societies and is a co-editor-in-chief of the journal, Veterinary Immunology and Immunopathology. |
