Dr Rob Skilton is a Research Scientist, responsible for research-related services and capacity building at the BecA Hub. He is a molecular biologist with emphasis on molecular parasitology, and the development of diagnostic tests and vaccines for livestock diseases. Dr Skilton has a keen interest in capacity building through research and training and has supervised and mentored numerous B.Sc., M.Sc., and Ph.D. students in Africa, and developed and given training courses in Africa, Europe and Asia. He has published widely in refereed journals, book chapters, and conference papers.
After graduating in biology in 1980 from Portsmouth Polytechnic, UK, he took a Technical Research position at the Ludwig Institute for Cancer Research, London, and in 1985 became a Senior Research Officer and Laboratory Manager at the Clinical Oncology Unit at St. George’s Hospital Medical School, London. In 1991, he became a Research Associate at the International Laboratory for Research on Animal Diseases (ILRAD), Nairobi – now known as the International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI). In 2000, he was awarded a Ph.D. in molecular parasitology from the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg. Subsequently, he did postdoctoral research at ILRI, before becoming a Consultant Scientist in 2002. He took up the position of Research Scientist at the BecA Hub in January 2007.
