Reader in Plant Virology, Department of Plant Sciences, Cambridge University (UK)

Dr John Carr is the Reader in Plant Virology at Cambridge University's Department of Plant Sciences and a fellow of Corpus Christi College Cambridge. Prior to working at Cambridge, John Carr researched virus resistance mechanisms at the University of Utah Medical School in Salt Lake City and The Waksman Institute of Microbiology at Rutgers University in New Jersey with Dan Klessig, and at Cornell University's Department of Plant Pathology in Ithaca New York with Milton Zaitlin. He did his PhD work at the University of Liverpool with Mike Wilson and at Rothamsted Research with John Antoniw and Ray White.

John Carr’s research interests include plant-pathogen interactions (especially plant resistance), viral silencing suppressors, viral gene expression mechanisms, plant-virus-insect vector interactions, and the effects of virus infection of the interactions of plants with beneficial insects such as pollinators. He has collaborated with the BecA-ILRI Hub scientists since 2010 in projects aimed at benefiting resource-poor smallholder famers by developing novel strategies to protect crops against viruses and their insect vectors.
