National Council for Science and Technology (NCST) promotes and coordinates matters of science,
technology and innovations in Kenya. The NCST is calling for proposals for innovative science and technology projects and proposals from multidisicplinary teams of Kenyan women scientists.

THE 2nd CALL FOR INNOVATIONS
Do you have a novel idea that can lead to solving challenges facing the
society? NCST invites potential Kenyan Innovators to submit proposals
for possible funding under the Science, Technology and Innovation (ST&I)
Grant. Part of this Grant is aimed to support innovations in the country. This
call is intended to support Innovators develop their prototypes. NCST may
assist in linking the successfully developed prototypes with venture capitals
for commercialization. Innovations are today the most important driver of
economic growth. NCST recognizes that harnessing this potential in line with
national policies will be critical in increasing the role of technological innovations
in addressing the country competitiveness. Kenya Vision 2030 and the Science,
Technology and Innovation Policy and Strategy recognize ST&I as a key foundation
whose integration can raise productivity and efficiency across all sectors of the
economy.

THE 2nd COMPETITIVE CALL FOR
PROPOSALS FROM KENYAN WOMEN
SCIENTISTS/RESEARCHERS

NCST invites multidisciplinary research teams of Kenyan women scientists
from public and private institutions to submit PROPOSALS for funding under
the Science, Technology and Innovation (ST&I) Grant. Areas of Natural Sciences,
Health, Engineering and Technology will be given a priority. The Grant is targeted
to harnessing the participation of Kenyan women scientists and researchers in
providing research-based solutions in support of a knowledge-based economy.

Objectives of the Call
i) Promote collaborative solution based scientific research.
ii) Generate tangible products and services to increase the Country
competitiveness.
iii) Creating opportunities for new technologies generation, transfer and adoption.
iv) Increasing application of research findings and innovations for employment
creation.
v) Engendering ST&I in Kenyan economy.

IFAR Professional Development Grants

In support of its mission, IFAR annually provides small grants to professionals from national agricultural research systems in developing countries (NARS). The award made to the youngest woman grantee each year will be designated the Ravi Tadvalkar Memorial Scholarship, in recognition of the many contributions to the organization by IFAR’s first Treasurer and Secretary, his commitment to capacity building in developing countries, and his concern about diversity and gender issues.

IFAR also manages the IFAR Wilfried Thalwitz Scholarship established in his memory by
the family and friends of the late CGIAR Chair for research linked with CGIAR Centers.
Nominations for these awards must be sponsored by one or more CGIAR Center/s (see
http://www.cgiar.org/ for a full list of Centers), and the work programs proposed by
applicants must be closely linked with the program of a CGIAR Center. Applicants are
encouraged to collaborate with Center scientists when preparing their project proposals
for submission to IFAR.

African Union Research Grants: Science and Technology and ICT
       
The African Union Commission is seeking proposals for research focusing on the following thematic priorities articulated in Africa’s Science and Technology Consolidated Plan of Action (CPA) and its Lighthouse Projects: (a) Post-harvest and Agriculture, (b) Renewable and Sustainable Energy, and (c) Water and Sanitation in Africa. The programme is financed through the Financing Agreement between the European Commission and the ACP Group of States under the ACP Research for Sustainable Development Program of the 10th EDF Intra-ACP Envelop.

Royal Geographical Society - Grants

The Society has 18 named grantprograms across four categories (research, students, teaching, andexpeditions). Most grants are for individuals, and some are for UKresidents only.  Research grants focus on agricultural and pastoralsystems, soil and water management, climate change, ecological surveys,and others.  Grants range from £500 to £15 thousand.  The Society postsa calendar of application deadlines.

Conservation, Food, and Health Foundation - Grants

Grants are offered to NGOs in resource conservationand sustainable agriculture (in addition to health).  Grants supportresearch and solve specific problems in order to build capacity indeveloping countries.  There are no geographical restrictions.  Theaverage grant size is US$11,000, and grants are rarely over US$25,000.

Borlaug LEAP (Leadership Enhancement in Agriculture Program) – Grants for Thesis Research at centers of the CGIAR

The LEAP is open to graduate students from developingcountries who show strong promise as leaders in the field ofagriculture and related disciplines.  Awards of up to US$20,000 aremade on a competitive basis to graduate students who show strongscientific and leadership potential, and who have a research proposalcoordinated between their home university, a U.S. university, and amentor in the CGIAR.  Reviews of applications are conducted twice ayear.

Third World Academy of Sciences (Academy of sciences for the developing world)


TWAS’s International Programme for Higher Education and Research(IPHER) provides some 250 fellowships tenable in developing countriessuch as Brazil, China and India for scientists from developingcountries. The Commonwealth Scholarship Commission


We are delighted to announce that the Commonwealth Scholarship Commission has awarded up to 15 full fee distance learning scholarships to the MSc in International Animal Health programme for 2008.

These scholarships are available for students from developing Commonwealth nations in sub-Saharan Africa; the eligible countries are: Botswana, Cameroon, Gambia, Ghana, Kenya, Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, Nigeria, Sierra Leone, South Africa, Swaziland, Tanzania, Uganda and Zambia.

The Academy of Sciences for the Developing World (TWAS)


Grants for Scientific Meetings Held in Developing Countries. Since 1986, TWAS has been supporting scientists and institutions in developing countries through a wide range of programmes including supporting scientific meetings organized in developing countries. TWAS encourages the organization of high level international and regional scientific activities in developing countries by offering financial assistance to the organizers of conferences, workshops, symposia and special meetings held in these countries.  Grants are offered for meetings in the following fields of natural sciences: agricultural, biological, chemical, engineering, geological and medical sciences.
