Dr. Francesca Stomeo has joined the BecA Hub as a Post Doctoral Scientist - Genomics.Born in the heel of the boot (the South of Italy), as she likes to say, Francesca obtained a BSc in Biology from the University of Pavia in the North of Italy, an Advanced Studies Diploma (DEA) in Genetics and Microbial Technologies from the University of Seville (Spain) and a European Marie Curie Ph.D. in Microbiology and Molecular Biology at the Institute of Natural Resources and Agrobiology of Seville (IRNASE), part of the Superior Council of Scientific Investigations (CSIC), in Spain. Her PhD. project focused on the conservation of Cultural Heritage sites by means of traditional microbiological and molecular techniques based on DNA and RNA. For the past two and a half years Francesca has been a post doctoral researcher at the Institute for Microbial Biotechnology and Metagenomics (IMBM) at the University of the Western Cape (UWC) in South Africa where she focused on the characterization of the microbial diversity, structure and function of Antarctic Dry Valleys soils, permafrost and hypoliths. Francesca has strong experience and interest in microbial ecology of extreme environments and Metagenomics techniques (microbial/bacterial/eukaryotic DNA/RNA extraction, cultivation, etc.), phylogenetic analysis (T-RFLP, DGGE, ARDRA, RAPD, etc) and bioinformatic tools (CHROMAS, BioEdit, CLUSTAL, MOTHUR, R, PERL, PRIMER 6, GEL COMPARE, T-REX, PAT, RDP, etc). Francesca enthusiastically joined the BecA - ILRI Hub as a post-doctoral fellow on January 23rd 2012. |
