![]() Biosciences eastern and central Africa (BecA) Hub in Nairobi was recently honoured and thrilled to receive Mr. Bill Gates during a visit he paid to BecA facilities and research projects funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation that are conducted at BecA. Mr. Gates' visit to BecA, on Friday the 4th of December, 2009, focussed on the recently commissioned research facilities on the ILRI campus and included a guided tour by the BecA Hub Director Dr. Segenet Kelemu, through the laboratories where he was briefed on the activities that are being conducted by BecA and its CGIAR partners hosted in the hub, namely ICRISAT, IITA, CIMMYT and CIP. The Director General of ILRI, Dr. Carlos Sere, the DDG-Research of ILRI, Dr. John McDermott, and one of the BecA Hub scientists Dr. Jagger Harvey accompanied Mr. Gates and two of his staff members including Dr. David Bergvinson during the tour. Drs. Santie de Villiers, Morag Ferguson, Kassa Semagn, Appolinaire Djikeng, Rob Skilton, Steve Kemp, Gabrielle Persley were among the scientists who interacted with Mr. Gates. Graduate students, including Robert Kawuki and Heneriko Kulembeka, also interacted with Mr. Gates. Mr Gates was very interested in the work that BecA and its partners do and asked numerous questions that lead to lively discussions. |
