Nguya Maniania is a Research Scientist and Head of the arthropod pathology unit at the International Centre of Insect Physiology and Ecology (icipe). As insect pathologist, Dr. Maniania’s main focus is on the development of insect pathogens as alternatives to synthetic insecticides for the control of arthropod pests of agricultural importance and disease vectors. His research activities cover bioprospecting for entomopathogens, strain selection, tritrophic interactions, and mass production and development of systems for delivery of the pathogen (autodissemination device), especially entomopathogenic fungi, in the field. In order to improve the delivery of the pathogen in wild populations, research is being undertaken to identify strong visual cues and powerful chemical cues (pheromones and kairomomes) for attraction of hosts into a focus of pathogen in the device.

Recently, Dr. Maniania succeeded in introducing Green Muscle® (a fungus based biopesticide), initially developed in West Africa for the control of Desert locust, Schistocereca gregaria, into Madagascar for control of Malagasy migratoria locust, Locusta migratoria capito. He is also collaborating with other insect pathologists on new fungal entomopathogens insights.
