C.F. Curtiss Distinguished Professor in Agriculture and Life Sciences,Iowa State University

Max Rothschild has devoted his research and teaching career to the field of animal breeding and molecular genetics. His primary work has been associated with growth and performance in livestock and the genetics of disease resistance. Recent research has been directed towards identifying genes controlling traits of economic importance in the pig, cattle and other domesticated species. He and his lab have discovered a large number of individual genes associated with traits of importance and many of these are used in selection in the commercial pig industry worldwide to improve pig performance. He is widely recognized as a world leader in the field of pig genetics. He is a member of many national and international societies.

Rothschild also has been active developing livestock projects in developing countries including many parts of Asia and has been associated with the Center for Sustainable Rural Livelihoods. He has worked for 5 years in Uganda with VEDCO, a NGO, working with families to improve livestock production. He has also been involved in animal breeding research, partnering with ILRI and has also worked in South Africa in ways to apply animal genetics to animal improvement.
