Edwin Isaac Onyiego is the greenhouse assistant at the BecA-ILRI Hub. Prior to this appointment, he worked at the BecA-ILRI Hub’s Central Core Unit as a laboratory assistant for more than two years and was also assigned duties in biosafety level II greenhouses.
As greenhouse assistant, Edwin is responsible for implementing integrated pest management practices in the plant growth facility, scouting for insect, disease and weed pests, soil and soilless media preparations; including continuous supply of sterilized soil / sand mixtures and Performing crop sprays with pesticides to manage insect, disease and weed pests as needed and also Monitoring and programming of greenhouse and chamber daily environmental conditions.
He also performs plant care, including daily watering of plants in the Plant Growth Facility, performing scheduled requested fertilization, observations of plant health and pest and disease incidences as well as providing horticultural and agronomic advice and consumables to the plant growth facility clients and users.
Edwin holds a diploma in biotechnology from Technical University of Kenya.
