The BecA-ILRI Hub's first lab management course

The BecA-ILRI Hub conducted a five-day training on Introduction to Principles in Laboratory Management and Equipment Operations Workshop from 4th to 8th June 2012. Areas covered in the training included general lab design; good laboratory practices (GLP) in lab management; laboratory health and safety; laboratory biosafety and biosecurity; equipment operations and maintenance; supply chain management; shipping of biological materials; material transfer agreements; and intellectual property rights.
The workshop comprised lectures and hands on training given by experts in laboratory management and electronics engineering staff. Also on site were equipmet and reagent suppliers Bio-Zek Kenya (Qiagen), Africa Biosystems Ltd, InQaba Biotec EA, Chem-Labs Ltd, Fisher & Scientific, who gave relevant presentations and product displays.
The twenty five participants of this workshop were drawn from 10 African countries namely - Cameroon, Congo Brazaville, The Democratic Republic of Congo, Ethiopia, Kenya, Rwanda, South Sudan, Sudan, Tanzania and Uganda. Their excitement and enthusiastic comments confirmed that this training was very timely and relevant to the region. As one participant from Cameroon put it:
“I am just at the beginning of my research career and this training is very timely. The course content was detailed, clear, straightforward and accessible.”
